Pile of saffron crocus flowers

Golden time

A few years ago we planted 100 saffron bulbs in our vege garden and every autumn up pop the purple crocus flowers which we pluck and strip the stamens from and throw away the flower. Such a shame in a way. This year the saffron has come early and because we were out yesterday and didn’t pick any today we had a bumper crop as you can see below. It’s gotten so that we can’t use anything like as much as we produce, we’ve barely started on last year’s lot and we gave the last of the previous years away at Canterbury Faire this year.
